David Helvarg, long-time ocean journalist and author of 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, as well as the founder of the Blue Frontier conservation movement, will give a free public lecture at the University of Florida on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 1:30 to 3 pm.
In his talk, titled “The Ocean and the Election,” Helvarg will share responses he received from the two leading presidential candidates about a series of actions he has proposed to promote restorative ocean policy at the federal level. The actions were contained in a letter signed by more than 100 leaders in marine science, business, exploration and conservation.
Helvarg will also share ideas for how citizens can make a difference on behalf of the ocean and its coastal communities. His presentation includes powerful visual imagery reminding viewers of the intimate ways their lives are linked to the sea.
The lecture will be in Room 3320 of the J. Wayne Reitz Union student center on the UF campus. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited metered parking is available in the Reitz Union garage.
Helvarg is also available to talk with students and faculty from noon to 1 pm in a smaller brownbag ‘meet-and-greet’ in Weimer Hall 3320, the College of Journalism and Communications’ Innovation News Center conference room on the third floor.
