Did you know that every time you wash your face, do laundry or brush your teeth you may be adding tiny bits of plastic into our waters?
These microscopic particles of plastic never break down in the environment, and eventually end up in our coastal waters, where they may be accidentally eaten by marine life. They also attract toxins in the environment which can easily adhere to their surface.
Join Florida Sea Grant for a free and family-friendly science café to learn what you can do to reduce microplastic pollution in Florida’s waters. The event will take place July 21, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Boxcar Beer and Wine Garden at Depot Park, located at 201 SE Depot Ave. in Gainesville, Fla.
Florida Sea Grant agent Maia McGuire, founder of the Florida Microplastic Awareness Project, will share information about the sources of microplastics, how they end up in our waters, and the threat they pose to marine life. She’ll also share tips and tricks for how you can reduce your plastic footprint.
Water samples and microscopes will also be provided so you can see first-hand what these tiny plastic bits look like.
