Due to the potential impact of Hurricane Irma and the uncertainty of travel conditions throughout the state on Monday and Tuesday next week, the workshop and reception have been postponed until further notice. Florida Sea Grant and the Gulf Shellfish Institute are hosting a workshop titled, “Red Tide Stinks! Shellfish Industry Strategies for Dealing with Harmful Algal Blooms,” that aims to bring together industry, scientists and regulators to discuss shellfish industry challenges as related to harmful algal blooms.
The workshop will take place Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the South Florida Museum, 201 10th St. W., in Bradenton. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Coffee and lunch will be provided.
Workshop topics will include:
- A general overview of shellfish regulations in the U.S.
- Red tide science and updates
- An overview of Florida shellfish management
- Threats to the shellfish industry in the Northeast U.S.
- Threats to shellfish in the Gulf states
- Economic impact of shellfish harvesting closures
- Facilitated discussion on industry concerns and requests for change
Following the workshop, an evening reception in recognition of the Florida shellfish aquaculture industry will also take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Attendees can sample a mix of local seafood, and mingle with other members of the shellfish industry.
