Knowing how to properly handle fish during the landing and release is one of the most important set of skills a fisherman can acquire. In the all-new Catch and Release: Ways you can help saltwater fish survive!, Florida Sea Grant and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission provide updates to practical advice for fishermen who want to increase the survival rate of fish released.
The brochure features an all-new section on deep-water release techniques for snapper, grouper and other reef fish. Fish taken from deep water undergo expansion of gases in their swim bladder as they are brought to the surface. Because the expanded gas remains trapped in the fish body cavity, it is often difficult for the fish to swim back to capture depth without some help from the fisherman.
Now included are tips for using descending equipment and venting tools, as well as a variety of tackle that will help fishermen increase the survival rate of the fish they release. Copies of the brochure are available in a number of locations throughout Florida, including FWC offices and UF/IFAS Extension offices with Sea Grant agents.
Copies may be requested in bulk by contacting Florida Sea Grant at info@flseagarnt.org, or 352.392.2801, or the FWC Division of Marine Fisheries Management at (850) 487-0554. The brochure can also be downloaded here.
