Although biotechnology is a multi-billion dollar industry with markets projected to grow 15-20% annually over five years, Florida lags far behind other states and countries in this field. About a fourth of the Florida Sea Grant budget for research addresses marine biotechnology. This pool of funding represents the only coherent, coordinated and central source of support for Florida faculty and students in the state. The potential for this field is so great that Sea Grant is seeking to establish a formal multi-university program.

Marine Biotechnology Research at Florida Sea Grant
Marine biotechnology is an exciting new area of scientific discovery and application serving a broad variety of fields including medicine, seafood production and safety, environmental monitoring and conservation of ocean fisheries. Sea Grant has established one of the larger marine biotechnology research efforts in the United States, in a fairly short time. Twenty-four major studies (21 started since 1998) are summarized in easy-to-read language useful to lay and scientific readers alike, in a format that describes research goals, methods and breakthrough, with publications and student degrees indicated.
