Florida Sea Grant is now accepting statements of interest for two-year coastal and ocean applied research grants in the following areas:
- Healthy Oceans and Coasts
- Sustainable Coastal Communities and Economies
- Safe and Sustainable Seafood
- Sustainable Coastal Communities and Economies
- Hazard-Resilient and Climate-Ready Coasts
The statewide competition is open to any principal investigator at any of the universities in Florida who has documented expertise in the specific area of proposed research, and has worked with a specific industry or agency partner that makes use of a research product to address some coastal or ocean issue. In addition, each proposal must include full or partial funding of at least one student who is being mentored by the principal investigator. That student must be actively contributing to the project as part of a thesis, dissertation, or undergraduate research.
The maximum Florida Sea Grant award is $200,000 for two years, with no more than $100,000 in each individual budget year. A 50 percent match is required for each funded project. Florida Sea Grant intends to fun approximately 10 research projects, including one special project co-funded with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and one technology transfer project.
The deadline to submit statements of interest is February 13, 2015 at 4 p.m. EST and results will be shared by April 17, 2015. For complete details about the call for proposals and how to submit a statement of interest, visit the Biennial Call for Proposals page.
The statement of interest is a project pre-proposal that identifies a topic relevant to coastal and ocean needs in Florida and the nation. It describes the scope of the need, problem or opportunity, and how the results achieved under a grant would contribute to development, conservation, or use of ocean and coastal resources and economies.
Statements of interest also allow for review of concepts, rationale, general approach, end-user participation and expected outcomes and impacts before faculty must commit extensive effort to writing a narrative of detailed methods and other aspects of a full proposal.
