Florida Sea Grant partnered with the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (Apalachicola NERR) to bring the workshop “Adaptive Planning for Coastal Change–Legal Issues for Local Government” to the Florida Panhandle on August 9, 2012.

The workshop presented local government planners and attorneys with the science of sea-level rise in an easy-to-understand manner. The workshop addressed some of the ways that property protections–both constitutional and statutory–may impact local government planning for our changing coastlines. The workshop included a Florida county attorney discussing a case a county had been fighting; the case demonstrates costs that local governments may incur in the future for permitting decisions being made today. The workshop also discussed ways that local governments may more effectively plan for a changing coastline and offered strategy and tools that will help in this endeavor.
The cooperation of the Apalachicola NERR and Florida Sea Grant along with support from the Weeks Bay Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Florida Coastal Training Program, and The Gulf of Mexico Alliance allowed this program to be made available to local government planners and attorneys for only $10. Other participants paid only $20. Lunch on-site was included in the registration fee.
